Quick answer
Business credit cards and expense management for Indian SMEs: HDFC BizFirst and BizGrow, ICICI business cards, Axis commercial cards and the ITC angle.

A business credit card is not a rewards card with a suit on. Done right, it separates company spends from personal ones, puts 45-odd days of free float behind your working capital, earns on the categories a business actually pays — GST, utilities, software, travel — and feeds clean, input-tax-creditable records to your accountant. Done carelessly, it is a 40%-a-year debt line attached to your firm. The verified cards, from issuer pages, as of November 2026:
HDFC BizFirst: the ₹500 workhorse
BizFirst carries a joining and renewal fee of ₹500 plus taxes, with the renewal waived on ₹50,000 of spend in the anniversary year. The earn: 2,000 bonus CashPoints every quarter on quarterly spends of ₹75,000 or more (all retail spends excluding rent and petrol), each CashPoint worth up to ₹0.15 against the statement, plus a 1% fuel surcharge waiver capped at ₹250 a cycle. Eligibility accepts an annual ITR above ₹6 lakh and GST returns — the document set a small business actually has. Source: hdfcbank.com BizFirst page, November 2026.
HDFC BizGrow: the GST-and-bills card
BizGrow costs the same ₹500 plus taxes, waived on ₹1 lakh of anniversary-year spend, and earns 2 CashPoints per ₹200 (up to ₹0.25 each) with 10X CashPoints on bill payments, IT and GST payments, hotel and flight bookings and business productivity tools — the lanes where business money actually flows — plus 2,000 bonus CashPoints on ₹1 lakh of quarterly spends. The issuer's headline claims up to 3% savings on utility, IT and GST payments; the 10X lane's caps live in the card's T&C, so verify before you route your entire GST year through it. At full rate, 10X on ₹100 converts to about ₹2.50 of value — 2.5% on the payments a business cannot avoid. Source: hdfcbank.com BizGrow page, November 2026.
ICICI Business cards: the NIL-fee entry
ICICI's business fee schedule prices the Business Silver and Gold cards at NIL joining and annual fee (add-on cards not applicable), the Business Platinum at ₹999, and the Business Ascent Amex cards at ₹1,000 and ₹1,500. The credit line behaves like any card's: 3.4% a month — 40.8% a year — on revolving balances for the standard variants, with a Business Secured Card variant at 2.5% a month (30% a year) that carries no revolving facility at all. Late fees run 30% of the minimum due, ₹400–₹700. Source: icicibank.com business fees and charges page, November 2026.
Axis commercial cards: the control layer
Axis's commercial card range — including its Purchase Reward Card — earns EDGE Reward Points on business spends (1 point per ₹200 domestic, 2 per ₹200 international, per the issuer's page), and its real business feature is the control panel: employee cards with customised spending limits, so field spends hit the company account without reimbursement spreadsheets. Insurance covers on the cards run to personal-accident air cover of ₹2–4.5 crore by variant. Source: axisbank.com commercial credit cards page, November 2026.
The GST angle: why the card belongs to the business
HDFC's business cards support GST payments through the GST portal and linking your GSTIN to the card for input-tax-credit tracking — the issuer walks cardholders through the payment.gst.gov.in flow and the PAN-plus-GST-document linking request. Paying GST by card buys 45-odd days of float on a payment that is due on fixed dates anyway, and the card statement arrives category-coded, which is exactly what your accountant needs at filing time. As our GST guide covers, input credit only survives on proper documentation — the card is one more document trail, not a substitute for it.
Expense management: the software layer
The card is half the system; the other half is expense software that captures, codes and approves spends. Happay — which positions itself as India's largest travel, expense and payments platform, serving 8,000-plus businesses — runs AI-assisted capture that pulls expense data from multiple sources into policy-compliant filings. The pattern to copy at small scale: every business spend on the business card, every card transaction coded to a purpose, and the statement reconciled monthly against your books — the books our accounting-software post helps you choose. Card controls (Axis's spend limits, HDFC's transaction toggles) do at the bank what policy does on paper.
Choosing between the two HDFC cards
At ₹3 lakh of annual business spends, both cards waive their fee comfortably — BizFirst needs ₹50,000, BizGrow ₹1 lakh — so the comparison is pure earn. BizFirst's milestone (2,000 CashPoints on ₹75,000 a quarter) pays ₹300 of statement value per quarter at ₹0.15 a point — ₹1,200 a year if all four quarters land, on spends of ₹3 lakh. BizGrow's 10X lane is where the money moves: at ₹0.25 a point, base earn of 2 CashPoints per ₹200 becomes roughly 2.5% on the eligible bill-payment, IT-solutions and GST lanes. A firm routing ₹2 lakh a year through that lane earns around ₹5,000 of CashPoints before caps — over four times BizFirst's milestone value on the same money. The rule: BizFirst if your spends scatter across many small merchants, BizGrow if they concentrate in the GST-and-bills lanes — and verify the 10X caps in the T&C either way.
The float, priced honestly
The quiet business benefit is the interest-free window — up to 55 days on the HDFC business cards, 48 to 50 on the ICICI variants per their fee pages. Float on ₹5 lakh of monthly card spends is, in effect, a free credit line of one-and-a-half months of expenses; at an overdraft rate of 9%, that cycle of float is worth roughly ₹5,500 of avoided interest per month (₹5,00,000 × 9% × 45/365 — illustrative, at your OD's actual rate). That is the real business case for the card: not the rewards, the float — and it survives only while the statement is paid in full, because at ICICI's 3.4% a month the interest bill outruns every benefit column here in a single quarter.
Employee cards: the control layer in practice
Issue an add-on to every person who spends for the business, set their limit per Axis's controls to their realistic monthly need, and the reimbursement spreadsheet dies. The statement arrives coded by card, so a junior's fuel and a manager's software subscription never merge. The ICICI fee schedule prices add-on membership per card (NIL on Silver/Gold, not applicable on some variants), and HDFC's transaction toggles let you kill ATM or international use on cards that should never have it. The policy that works at small scale is three lines long: every business spend on a business card, no card without a limit, statement reconciled monthly against the books our accounting-software post helps you pick.

What goes wrong
- Revolve as working capital. 3.4% a month is 40.8% a year — more than double the 7.75–26% span our loans guide documents for business credit. A card is float between billing cycles, never the financing layer; for real working-capital money, our working-capital guide runs the cheaper routes.
- Mixing personal and business spends. The moment the statement mixes groceries with GST payments, the ITC trail and the accounting both blur. Two cards, two wallets, clean books.
- Chasing the 10X lane blind. Accelerated business rates carry caps and category definitions in the T&C; ₹6 lakh of GST payments earns nowhere near 10X on every rupee unless the caps allow it. Verify the cap before restructuring payment habits.
- Paying for perks the firm cannot use. Airport lounges matter to a two-person firm that flies monthly, not to a workshop. Match the fee to the perk usage arithmetic our review framework runs — the formula is the same for a business card.
- Cash as a bridge. The cash advance fee runs 2.5% with a ₹300 minimum on the ICICI business cards, billed from day one with no interest-free window — an ATM withdrawal on a business card is the most expensive rupee in the building. The working-capital routes in our dedicated post exist precisely for this.
- Late fees stacking on statutory dues. ICICI's business late fee is 30% of the minimum due, ₹400–₹700 per cycle, and a missed GST payment funded on the card still owes the GST late charges to the department. Autopay the statement in full — the float is the product, the fee schedule is the tax on forgetting.
The verdict
Start free or nearly free: ICICI Business Silver/Gold at NIL fee, or HDFC BizFirst at ₹500 waived on ₹50,000 — both modest thresholds for a functioning business. Add BizGrow only if your GST, IT-solutions and bill payments are large enough for its 10X lane to clear the fee, which our worked maths above says needs roughly ₹20,000 of month on those lanes. Use employee cards with limits instead of reimbursements. Pay the statement in full — the float is the product, the interest is the trap — and let the statement feed your books, because a business card that does not end in clean accounting is just a personal card with worse rewards.

Key takeaways
- HDFC BizFirst: ₹500 plus taxes, renewal waived at ₹50,000 anniversary spend, 2,000 quarterly CashPoints on ₹75,000 spends, eligibility via ITR above ₹6 lakh and GST returns.
- HDFC BizGrow: same ₹500 fee waived at ₹1 lakh, 2 CashPoints per ₹200 with 10X on bill payments, IT and GST payments, hotels and flights — up to 2.5% value on those lanes before caps.
- ICICI Business Silver and Gold carry NIL joining and annual fees — the zero-cost entry — while Business Platinum is ₹999 and the Amex Ascent cards ₹1,000–₹1,500.
- Business-card credit is not cheap working capital: ICICI's standard business cards charge 3.4% a month (40.8% a year); the card is float, not financing.
- GST payments can run through business cards (HDFC supports payment.gst.gov.in flows and GSTIN linking for input-tax-credit tracking) — float on fixed statutory dues plus a cleaner paper trail.
- Axis's commercial cards add the control layer: employee cards with customised spending limits replace reimbursement spreadsheets.
- Pair the card with expense software — Happay (8,000+ businesses per its site) or your books tool — and reconcile monthly; a business card that does not end in clean accounting is just a worse personal card.
Frequently asked questions
Which business credit card has no annual fee?
ICICI Bank's Business Silver and Gold cards carry NIL joining and annual fees per the bank's business fee schedule. HDFC BizFirst's ₹500 fee effectively disappears once anniversary-year spends cross ₹50,000. Both verified from issuer pages, November 2026.
Can I pay GST with a business credit card?
Yes — HDFC's business cards document GST payments through payment.gst.gov.in and offer GSTIN linking for input-tax-credit tracking. You buy up to about 45 days of float on statutory dues and get a category-coded statement your accountant can reconcile, but the dues themselves are unchanged.
Are business credit card interest rates lower than personal cards?
No. ICICI's standard business cards charge 3.4% a month — 40.8% a year — which is at the top of the personal-card range our card guide documents. Business cards are float tools between billing cycles, not a financing substitute for working-capital loans.
What documents does a business need for a credit card?
Issuer pages for this segment accept the business's own paperwork: an ITR above ₹6 lakh and GST returns (HDFC BizFirst/BizGrow), or proprietorship PAN and business proofs. GST registration is not always mandatory, but a GSTIN unlocks the ITC-tracking features that make the card worth having.
Do employee cards help with expense management?
Yes — Axis's commercial cards let you set customised spending limits per employee, and pairing any business card with expense software (Happay positions itself as India's largest T&E platform with 8,000+ businesses) automates capture and policy checks. The alternative — reimbursement forms — is where petty fraud and lost invoices live.
