₹10,000 a month at the grocery till or the delivery app is ₹1.2 lakh a year — the single biggest recurring spend most households put on a card after rent. The card it lands on swings the outcome by more than ₹10,000 a year, and grocery is where card fine print bites hardest: caps, channel rules and expiring points all cluster here. The verified lineup, from issuer pages, as of November 2026:

How grocery earn actually works

Groceries get rewarded through three different doors, and confusing them is the most common mistake. A category rate pays on the merchant type — HSBC Live+'s grocery bucket pays on grocery merchants wherever you shop. A channel rate pays on how the transaction reaches the network — SBI Cashback's 5% applies because the spend is online, whatever the app sells. A brand rate pays inside one company's ecosystem — Amazon Pay ICICI's 5% or Tata Neu Infinity's partner-brand rate. Each door has its own cap, and as our Bandhan comparison established from the MITC, rent and wallet loads never count toward anything good.

HSBC Live+ is the category king: 10% accelerated cashback on dining, food delivery, groceries, shopping and utility spends, capped at ₹1,200 a month across the bucket, with 1.5% unlimited cashback on other retailers. The issuer's own example table shows ₹9,000 of groceries returning ₹900. The page footnotes a category-clarification on the shopping bucket — verify which merchants count before planning around it. Amazon Pay ICICI turns the grocery basket into an Amazon.in question: 5% for Prime members on Amazon.in — which carries Amazon Fresh baskets through the same earn — 2% at Amazon Pay partner merchants and 1% elsewhere, credited as non-expiring Amazon Pay balance, on a card with NIL joining and annual fees. The reward table's asterisks point to exclusions in the MITC; run your mix through our review framework. Source: icici.bank.in, November 2026.

Tata Neu Infinity HDFC pays 5% back as NeuCoins on Tata Neu and partner Tata-brand spends — Tata's grocery arm BigBasket sits in that partner ecosystem — with grocery NeuCoins specifically capped at 2,000 a month, and 1.5% on other spends. The fee is ₹1,499 plus taxes, waived at ₹3 lakh of annual spend. One date to diarise: since 1 August 2025, NeuCoins expire 12 months after they credit. Source: hdfcbank.com, November 2026.

SBI Cashback pays 5% because the spend is online — BigBasket, Blinkit, Zepto, DMart Ready all qualify as online spends — with the online cap at ₹2,000 per cycle, as our online-shopping post documents from the April 2026 change. The Key Fact Statement prices the card at ₹999 joining and annual, waived at ₹2 lakh of annual spends. Source: SBI Card KFS, April 2026; sbicard.com, November 2026.

ICICI HPCL Super Saver earns a small grocery side-bet: 20 points per ₹100 — effectively 5% — on groceries and utilities among daily essentials, capped at 400 points a month. It is a fuel card first, as our fuel post establishes; the grocery earn is garnish, not a strategy. Source: icici.bank.in, November 2026.

The arithmetic: ₹12,000 a month of groceries

One household, ₹12,000 a month (₹1.44 lakh a year), routed three ways:

  • HSBC Live+ pays 10% up to the ₹1,200 monthly cap — the cap binds exactly at ₹12,000 of category spend. That is ₹14,400 a year, the highest verified grocery return in the set.
  • Amazon Pay ICICI with Prime pays 5% on Amazon.in groceries: ₹600 a month, ₹7,200 a year, with no fee to recover. Simpler, half the rate, zero carrying cost.
  • Tata Neu Infinity pays ₹7,200 of NeuCoins a year on the same basket (₹600 a month, well inside the 2,000-NeuCoin grocery cap), minus ₹1,769 of fee — ₹5,431 net, unless your annual spend clears the ₹3 lakh waiver. And the points must be spent within 12 months of earning.
  • SBI Cashback pays ₹7,200 a year at 5% (₹600 a month, inside the ₹2,000 cycle cap) minus ₹1,179 of fee, which never waives at this spend level — ₹6,021 net, with the upside that every other online spend feeds the same cap budget.

The stacking note

Live+'s ₹1,200 cap is per month across its whole bucket, so households spending above ₹12,000 on dining-plus-groceries-plus-utilities should route the overflow to a second card — which is exactly the two-card logic our zero-fee stack runs at ₹30,000 of monthly spend, returning ₹8,784 a year without a fee between them.

A worked two-card month for a ₹25,000 household budget — ₹12,000 groceries, ₹5,000 dining and delivery, ₹3,000 utilities, ₹5,000 everything else. Route dining and delivery (₹5,000) and the first ₹7,000 of groceries through Live+ at 10%: ₹1,200, the cap, hit exactly. The remaining ₹5,000 of groceries goes to Amazon Pay ICICI at 5% (Prime): ₹250. Utilities of ₹3,000 ride Axis ACE's 5% through Google Pay: ₹150. The ₹5,000 of other spends earns 1.5% on ACE: ₹75. Total: ₹1,675 for the month — ₹20,100 a year — from routing, not from spending a rupee more. Note the caps that did the work: Live+'s ₹1,200 monthly bucket, the grocery and utility lanes that stayed inside their own limits, and a 1.5% base absorbing the rest.

Where the delivery apps fit

Food delivery earns its own line in the verified set: Live+ lists food delivery inside the 10% bucket (the issuer's example table shows ₹5,000 of delivery spend returning ₹500), Millennia's 5% brand list names Swiggy and Zomato directly, and ACE pays 4% on Swiggy, Zomato and Ola. Quick-order grocery apps — Blinkit, Zepto, Instamart — are a different animal: they process as online spends, which makes them eligible for channel-rate cards like SBI Cashback, while a card locked to grocery merchant categories may miss them entirely. When your basket arrives by bike, check which door your card actually uses. Sources: hsbc.co.in, hdfcbank.com, axisbank.com, November 2026.

What goes wrong

  • Feeding one cap with two cards. SBI Cashback's ₹2,000 cycle cap is shared across all online spends; adding groceries to a card already maxing the cap on shopping earns nothing. Route by cap, not by habit.
  • Expiring ecosystem points. Tata NeuCoins now die at 12 months; Amazon Pay balance is non-expiring. Same 5% headline, very different outcomes for someone who redeems twice a year.
  • Assuming the category rate applies in-store. HSBC Live+'s grocery rate is a merchant-category rate and works at counters; SBI Cashback's rate exists only because the spend is online. A BigBasket order and a BigBasket store visit can pay differently — check the card's category terms.
  • The fee hiding the earn. Tata Neu Infinity's ₹1,769 needs ₹35,380 of 5% earns to break even; at our example household that is six months of groceries before the card nets positive. A NIL-fee card at half the rate is often the better year-one answer.
  • Points locked inside one ecosystem. Tata NeuCoins redeem on the Tata Neu app and partner brands per the issuer's page — value you can only spend inside Tata's shops. If your household's non-grocery life happens outside that ecosystem, the "5%" is a discount on things you may not have bought anyway.
  • The exclusion list eating the basket. Co-brand and category cards exclude big recurring lanes — Amazon Pay ICICI's reward table carries MITC-referenced asterisks, and across issuers fuel, wallet loads, rent and government payments earn nothing good. A grocery strategy survives only if the rest of the basket does not poison the averages.

The sixty-second fee-page check

Before any grocery card earns wallet space, read four lines on the issuer's page. One: the cap — ₹1,200 a month on Live+, ₹2,000 a cycle on SBI Cashback, 2,000 NeuCoins on Tata grocery — and decide whether your basket outruns it. Two: the exclusions — the asterisk lanes and the never-count categories. Three: the fee and its waiver bar — ₹1,769 waived at ₹3 lakh on Tata Neu Infinity versus NIL on Amazon Pay ICICI changes the whole comparison. Four: the expiry — 12 months on NeuCoins, non-expiring on Amazon Pay balance. Every comparison in this post is those four lines arithmetic'd out; your version takes one page read and five minutes with a calculator.

The verdict

Pure grocery households under ₹12,000 a month: HSBC Live+, provided you confirm its fee and the category fine print on apply day. Prime members who already shop Amazon Fresh: Amazon Pay ICICI, free and effortless. BigBasket-heavy families: Tata Neu Infinity, with a 12-month redemption habit. Everything-online households: SBI Cashback as the channel base. And whichever door you choose, the earn exists only at full-statement discipline — our bill-payment guide covers why, because grocery cashback cannot outrun card interest.

Key takeaways

  • Grocery rewards come through three doors — category rate (HSBC Live+), channel rate (SBI Cashback's online-only 5%), brand rate (Amazon Pay ICICI's 5% for Prime on Amazon.in) — and each door has different caps.
  • HSBC Live+ pays 10% on groceries (with dining, delivery, shopping, utilities) capped at ₹1,200 a month — ₹14,400 a year at ₹12,000 monthly spends, the highest verified grocery return.
  • Amazon Pay ICICI earns 5% for Prime members on Amazon.in including Fresh baskets, on a NIL-fee card, with non-expiring Amazon Pay balance.
  • Tata Neu Infinity HDFC pays 5% NeuCoins on Tata partner-brand groceries (BigBasket's ecosystem) capped at 2,000 NeuCoins a month — but NeuCoins now expire 12 months after crediting, and the fee is ₹1,769 with GST.
  • SBI Cashback covers grocery apps as online spends at 5% up to ₹2,000 a cycle; ₹999 + GST fee, waived at ₹2 lakh annual spends per the April 2026 Key Fact Statement.
  • ICICI HPCL Super Saver adds a 5%-effective essentials earn capped at 400 points a month — garnish on a fuel card, not a grocery strategy.
  • Route overflow spends by cap, not habit: a shared ₹2,000 online cap or a ₹1,200 monthly category cap fills faster than most households expect.

Is a grocery-specific card worth it at low spends?

At ₹5,000 a month of groceries, the best rate returns about ₹6,000 a year — enough to justify a NIL-fee card like Amazon Pay ICICI, but a ₹1,769 fee card like Tata Neu Infinity nets under ₹4,300 in year one. Below roughly ₹8,000–10,000 of monthly category spend, prefer the free card and revisit when spends grow.
