Quick answer

Six business current accounts verified against the banks' own pages in November 2026 — HDFC Biz Lite+, IDFC FIRST, SBI, Axis, Kotak and ICICI — with the AMB penalties, the 75% trap and the RBI rule that your idle business cash earns nothing.

A current account is the only account that is legally allowed to run a business — and the only one that pays you exactly nothing for the money sitting in it. RBI's Interest Rate on Deposits Directions, 2025 says it outright: "No interest shall be paid on deposits held in current accounts." So the real cost of a current account is not its opening fee; it is the minimum-balance penalty, the transaction charges, and the 0% on every idle rupee. All six accounts below were verified against the banks' own pages on 1 November 2026.

The three numbers that decide everything

The balance requirement (AMB/AQB). Monthly or quarterly average — and it often drops sharply if you route collections through the bank's own QR/POS. HDFC's Biz Lite+ asks ₹25,000 a quarter but only ₹10,000 if your card/QR collections run through HDFC.

The penalty. Verified range: SBI charges ₹500+GST a month on its ₹5,000-AMB individual current account — the cheapest miss at any large bank. Axis is ₹700–₹1,000 a month. Kotak is ₹1,500–₹2,500 a quarter. HDFC's Biz Lite+ miss is ₹2,500 a quarter — ₹10,000 a year, which is the same as the ₹10,000 AQB it asks for. A penalty is not a fine you negotiate after; it is a price you should compare up front.

The 75% trap. At HDFC, Axis and Kotak, falling below 75% of the required balance does not just trigger the penalty — it can lapse your free cash-deposit and transaction limits for that period (Axis: the cash-deposit free limit "becomes zero" that month). A shortfall costs double.

The verified shortlist

HDFC Biz Lite+₹25,000/qtr — ₹10,000 with own QR/POS₹2,500/qtr₹2L/mo (6× AMB)Merchant-volume waiver; start-up and Saksham variants waive fees early

Axis Normal Current₹15,000₹700–₹1,000/mo₹2L/moPredictable cash handling; watch the 75% rule

Structure changes worth knowing before you search: HDFC's old Plus/Trade/Regular/Max current accounts were discontinued for new sourcing on 1 May 2025 — the live proposition is the Biz+ family. Kotak's Neo and Pro current accounts closed to new opening as of November 2026. If a comparison table still recommends "HDFC Plus", it is stale.

Which one for you

Sole trader or freelancer starting out: SBI Regular (₹5,000 AMB, ₹500 penalty) or IDFC FIRST Silver (₹10,000). Both keep the worst case cheap while you find your feet. IDFC adds zero NEFT/RTGS charges and an auto-sweep FD so idle cash earns something — the bank's own 6.50% claim, date-stamped and tied to FD rates that move.

Retailer with real cash flow: Axis Normal (₹2 lakh free cash deposits a month, ₹15,000 MAB) or Kotak Pro Business if your QR throughput is high — Kotak's free cash-deposit limit scales with last month's collections up to ₹1 crore.

Growing SME with card/QR collections: HDFC Biz Lite+. Route collections through HDFC and the AQB drops to ₹10,000 with the penalty waived on ₹3 lakh quarterly merchant volume — effectively the cheapest real requirement at a large private bank for a digital-first business.

Startup: HDFC Start-Up/Saksham (fee waivers in the early quarters) or IDFC FIRST Startup (nil AMB for the first three years, then ₹2 lakh). Importer/exporter: IDFC FIRST World Business — verified at ₹50k/₹2 lakh or trade-throughput alternatives.

Where idle business cash goes

Since the account pays nothing, the surplus needs a home. The built-in options: Kotak's ActivMoney sweep and IDFC FIRST's auto-sweep FD both move idle balances into deposits automatically; a plain FD ladder works everywhere but requires moving money yourself. For what that idle money is insured up to, see the DICGC explainer.

Neobanks: a layer, not a bank

RazorpayX describes its own offering as a current account "powered by" partner banks — the deposit sits at a licensed bank, RazorpayX is the payouts and automation layer on top. Jupiter runs on Federal Bank and CSB. Deposits carry the partner bank's DICGC cover, not the app's; cheque books, cash deposits and overdrafts depend on the partner bank, not the software. Use them for automation; do not treat them as a substitute for the bank relationship your GST registration and collections need.

Documents, and the RBI rules worth knowing

Proprietorship: PAN, Aadhaar, and increasingly GST/Udyam — Axis's Liberty Digital opens with zero documents uploaded if you supply GST+Udyam. Companies need incorporation documents and board resolutions. On regulation: if your business owes the banking system under ₹10 crore in CC/OD exposure, RBI's revised framework (December 2025 notification) leaves you free to open current accounts anywhere; the compulsory-consortium rules bite at ₹10 crore and above. And on the savings-account shortcut: banks define savings accounts as "meant for personal use" (Axis's own words) and current accounts as "meant for business purposes" (ICICI's) — running business volumes through a savings account invites restriction or closure, not a fine you can plan for.

Key takeaways

  • Current accounts pay zero interest by RBI rule (Interest Rate on Deposits Directions, 2025) — the account you choose is really a choice of penalty and limits.
  • Verified penalty range: SBI ₹500+GST/mo on ₹5,000 AMB (cheapest), Axis ₹700–₹1,000/mo, Kotak ₹1,500–₹2,500/qtr, HDFC ₹2,500/qtr.
  • The 75% trap: below 75% of the required balance, HDFC/Axis/Kotak can also lapse your free cash-deposit and transaction limits.
  • HDFC Biz Lite+'s AQB drops from ₹25,000 to ₹10,000 a quarter if your QR/POS collections run through the bank — waived entirely on ₹3L quarterly volume.
  • HDFC's old Plus/Trade/Regular accounts (discontinued May 2025) and Kotak's Neo/Pro (closed Nov 2026) still top stale comparison tables — verify the product exists before applying.
  • Neobanks (RazorpayX, Jupiter, Open) are software on a partner bank's licence — automation layer, not a replacement bank; deposits carry the partner bank's DICGC ₹5 lakh cover.
  • Running a business through a savings account risks restriction or closure — banks define savings as personal use in their own terms.

Frequently asked questions

Do current accounts earn interest in India?

No. RBI's Interest Rate on Deposits Directions, 2025 states no interest shall be paid on deposits held in current accounts. Workarounds: auto-sweep FD facilities (Kotak ActivMoney, IDFC FIRST's auto-sweep — its 6.50% is the bank's own claim, tied to FD rates) or manually laddering FDs.

What happens if I don't maintain the minimum balance in a current account?

A recurring charge, verified at: SBI ₹500+GST/month on its ₹5,000/₹10,000 AMB accounts; Axis ₹700–₹1,000/month; Kotak ₹1,500–₹2,500/quarter; HDFC ₹2,500/quarter. Below 75% of the required balance, HDFC, Axis and Kotak can additionally lapse your free transaction and cash-deposit limits for that period.

Can I use my savings account for my business?

No. Banks define savings accounts as meant for personal use (Axis) and current accounts as meant for business purposes (ICICI). High business volumes through a savings account risk restriction or closure, and you lose what a current account exists for: unlimited transactions, merchant collections, overdrafts and bulk payouts.
