Your EPF money isn’t going anywhere. I promise. But that blank screen or “Invalid Credentials” error? Maddening. I know.
If your EPF passbook won’t open, it’s usually one of three things after the July 2026 EPFO upgrade: your UAN isn’t activated yet (has to be done through UMANG now), your password hasn’t synced between EPFO’s servers yet (give it 6 to 24 hours), or there’s a mismatch in your KYC details. If you’re staring at a blank screen, your employer might not have filed that month’s contribution return yet.
Try the UMANG app first, or just call 1800-118-005 if you’re stuck.
Let’s walk through each problem and how to fix it. No jargon, no fluff.
1. Has Your UAN Been Activated?
This is the first thing to check. You literally cannot see your passbook without an activated UAN, and if you’ve never logged in before, it’s probably sitting there doing nothing.
Since the July 2026 portal upgrade, you can’t activate UAN on the website anymore. It’s UMANG app only, with face authentication. Sounds fancy, but it’s actually quick.
Here’s what you do:
- Download the UMANG app (Google Play or App Store)
- Sign up with your mobile number
- Search for “EPFO” inside the app
- Tap “UAN Services Through Face Auth” then “UAN Activation”
- Enter your 12-digit UAN, your Aadhaar number, and the mobile number linked to your Aadhaar
- It’ll ask you to install the Aadhaar Face RD App — do it when prompted
- First, complete the Aadhaar OTP verification
- Then do the face scan (just look at your front camera and blink once)
- Set your own password right there — you choose it, it doesn’t get sent to you via SMS
And you’re done. UAN activates immediately.
(News sources like CNBC TV18 and Fortune India confirmed EPFO moved UAN activation entirely to UMANG after the July 2026 migration.)
In short: UMANG > EPFO > UAN Services Through Face Auth > UAN Activation. Enter UAN, Aadhaar, Aadhaar-linked mobile. OTP + face scan. Set your password. Done.
2. The Secret Sync Delay (Seriously, Everyone Falls for This)
Okay, here’s the thing nobody warns you about.
EPFO runs its login system and its passbook system on two completely separate servers. When you change your password or activate your UAN, the new credentials take 6 to 24 hours to travel from one server to the other. Most people get lucky around the 6-hour mark.
What usually happens: You reset your password, get that “success” message, rush to the passbook portal, and immediately get “Invalid Credentials.” So you reset again. And again. Every time you reset, the sync timer starts over from zero.
Stop resetting. Seriously.
Just wait 6 hours. Don’t touch the password reset button in that window. After 24 hours if it still doesn’t work, then investigate other issues.
While you wait, try the UMANG app or Passbook Lite (inside the member portal) — they often work even when the main passbook portal is throwing a tantrum.
3. OTP Never Arrives? Here’s Why
Since January 2026, EPFO login requires an Aadhaar-based OTP. That OTP goes to whichever mobile number is linked to your Aadhaar card — which might not be the SIM you’re currently using.
Think about it: did you change your number since you got your Aadhaar made? Did you update Aadhaar when you switched from Jio to Airtel or vice versa? If not, the OTP is going to a phone you probably don’t have anymore.
Quick fixes:
-
- Try logging in early morning (before 10 AM) or late evening (after 6 PM) — telecom networks are less congested then
- Check which number is linked to your Aadhaar at uidai.gov.in
- If it’s wrong, visit the nearest Aadhaar centre to update it (carry your Aadhaar card and a valid ID)
- Always use the “Sign In using Aadhaar OTP” option — it connects directly through UIDAI
- Don’t hammer the Resend button. After two attempts, the system starts blocking you
4. The KYC Mismatch That Blocks Everything
This one’s sneaky. Even a tiny spelling difference between your EPFO records and your Aadhaar can stop your passbook from loading. I’m talking about stuff like “Kumar” vs “Kumar”, or your date of birth being off by one day, or a middle name that exists in one place but not the other.
How to check:
-
-
- Log in to unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in
- Go to Manage > KYC
- Check the status of your Aadhaar, PAN, and bank details
-
If it says “Pending for Employer Approval” — your company needs to approve it from their end. Ping your HR.
If it says “Rejected” — there’s a mismatch somewhere. You can raise a correction request online, or ask your employer to file a Joint Declaration.
One important thing about bank KYC: Since April 2025, bank account KYC doesn’t need your employer’s approval anymore — the bank verifies it directly. But Aadhaar and PAN corrections still need employer approval. Confusing, I know.
Also: from January 2026, Aadhaar-UAN linking is mandatory for full access. Without approved KYC, you can’t view your passbook, file claims, or withdraw money. No shortcuts.
5. Blank Screen or “Passbook Not Available”?
A blank screen or “Passbook not available for this Member ID” can mean a few things:
- Your employer hasn’t filed the ECR yet. Every employer has to file an Employee Contribution Return by the 15th of each month. If they missed the deadline, that month won’t show up until they file and pay. Check with your HR.
- Your company uses an exempted trust. Some companies (think TCS, Infosys, L&T) manage their PF through a private trust instead of EPFO. If that’s the case, your passbook on the EPFO portal will never show those entries. Ask HR for a separate PF trust statement.
- You’re selecting the wrong Member ID. Changed jobs? You probably have multiple Member IDs under one UAN. Make sure you’re picking the right one from the dropdown.
- Monthly processing delays. The first week of every month is when EPFO processes everyone’s contributions. The passbook might be temporarily down during that window.
Try confirming with HR, double-checking your Member ID, and giving it a day or two. If nothing works, call 1800-118-005.
6. Password Reset Won’t Work?
If you’ve forgotten your password, here’s the right way to reset it in 2026:
- Go to unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in (not the passbook portal — this trips people up)
- Click “Forgot Password”
- Enter your UAN and the captcha
- Verify using Aadhaar OTP
- Set a new password — it needs to be at least 8 characters, with one uppercase letter, one lowercase letter, one number, and one special character (@, #, or $)
- Don’t use your UAN as your password — the system will reject it
- Wait 10-15 minutes before trying to log in anywhere
If the reset itself fails, check these:
- Is your UAN activated? (If not, go back to Step 1 above)
- Does your name and date of birth match EPFO records exactly? (Even a space or comma matters)
- Can your Aadhaar-linked mobile receive OTP?
7. The Easy Way Out: UMANG App
Honestly, the UMANG app is more reliable than the EPFO website on most days. The website goes down, throws errors, makes you log in twice — UMANG just works.
Here’s how to check your passbook on UMANG:
- Open UMANG and log in
- Search for “EPFO”
- Tap Employee Centric Services > View Passbook
- Enter your UAN and the OTP
- Pick your Member ID
- View or download as PDF
You can also activate your UAN, file claims, and track your claim status all from the same app.
Another option: Passbook Lite
Log in to unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in and click View > Passbook Lite. It works right inside the member portal without sending you to a separate website. Saves you the pain of logging in twice.
Still Stuck? Contact EPFO
If you’ve tried everything above and nothing’s working:
- Toll-free helpline: 1800-118-005
- Another helpline: 14470 (toll-free, daily 7 AM to 9 PM, available in multiple languages)
- Grievance portal: epfigms.gov.in
- Missed call for instant balance: 9966044425 (needs activated UAN with Aadhaar linked)
- SMS: Send “EPFOHO UAN” to 7738299899 (also needs activated UAN with Aadhaar linked)
If your passbook has been blank for over 48 hours or a Member ID has completely vanished, file a grievance on EPFIGMS with the right category. They usually respond within 7 to 10 business days.
The Bottom Line
Your EPF money is safe. The passbook not opening doesn’t mean your contributions disappeared. Almost every problem in 2026 comes down to sync delays, KYC mismatches, or the new Aadhaar-OTP rule catching people off guard. The UMANG app is your best friend when the website acts up.
