Post Office Savings Account & RD/FD Passbook Download & Password Guide
Introduction
Remember those days standing in queue at the post office, waiting for someone to stamp your passbook? That little book with handwritten entries was the only thing proving your savings existed. Not anymore. India Post now lets you view and download your passbook from home – savings accounts, RD, FD, PPF, even Sukanya Samriddhi. No counter visit needed just to see your balance.
But honestly? The India Post portal can be a pain. People get stuck all the time. They cannot figure out the PDF password, they don’t know which URL to land on, or they get some cryptic error. This guide covers all that headache stuff.
Physical Passbook vs ePassbook
The physical passbook is still the official record. When you open a post office savings account, RD, FD, MIS, SCSS, PPF, or Sukanya Samriddhi account, you get one. Every deposit, withdrawal, and interest credit gets stamped at the counter.
The ePassbook is basically the same thing but digital. Shows the same balance and transaction history, on your phone or laptop. India Post launched it in October 2022 and has been adding more schemes since.
Schemes you can check online:
- Savings Account (SB)
- Recurring Deposit (RD)
- Time Deposit (TD / FD)
- Monthly Income Scheme (MIS)
- Senior Citizens Savings Scheme (SCSS)
- Public Provident Fund (PPF)
- Sukanya Samriddhi Account (SSA)
- National Savings Certificate (NSC)
- Kisan Vikas Patra (KVP)
How to Download Your Passbook Online
You have a few options here.
Method 1: Through the POSB ePassbook Website
No app needed. No internet banking required. Just a phone number that is registered with the post office.
Open https://posbseva.indiapost.gov.in/indiapost/signin
Type in your mobile number and the captcha
Hit “Login” – an OTP lands on your phone
Enter that OTP and submit
On the next page, click the “ePassbook” icon
Pick your scheme type from the list (Savings, RD, TD, PPF, etc.)
Enter your account number and registered mobile number
Type the captcha and click “Continue”
One more OTP will come. Enter it.
Now you will see your dashboard with three options:
- Balance Enquiry – see what you have
- Mini Statement – recent transactions
- Download Statement – pick a date range and download
Method 2: Via IPPB Mobile Banking App
If you have an India Post Payments Bank account, this works too.
Get the IPPB Mobile Banking app from Play Store or App Store
Register with your account number, customer ID, and date of birth
Log in
Head to the Dashboard
Tap on “Passbook” or “Statement”
Pick your date range
Hit “Download” – it saves as PDF
Method 3: Via Dak Sewa App
India Post added ePassbook to the Dak Sewa app in 2025.
Open Dak Sewa App
Go to “Services”
Select “POSB ePassbook”
Enter your mobile number, verify with OTP
Enter your account number, second OTP
Dashboard opens with all the same options
That Annoying PDF Password
This is the most common question I get: “I downloaded the PDF but it wants a password. What do I type?”
Truth is, the password format varies. Here is what usually works:
Most common format:
First 4 digits of your Date of Birth (DDMM) + Last 4 digits of your registered mobile number
- Example: Born 15/03/1991, mobile ends with 1234, password = 15031234
Other formats to try:
- Your full DOB in DDMMYYYY – 15031991
- Last 4 digits of account number + DOB
If nothing works, check the email or SMS you got when downloading. Sometimes the password is in that message. Or call India Post at 155299 and ask.
Common Portal Issues
People run into the same problems over and over. Here is how to fix them.
“Phone Banking/IVRS is not enabled for the account”
This one frustrates everyone. It just means your mobile number isn’t activated for the ePassbook service.
Fix: Go to your home post office branch. Ask them to enable mobile banking or IVRS for your account in the Finacle system. Take your passbook and Aadhaar card. Takes 5 minutes at the counter.
OTP not coming
Check these:
- Is your mobile number actually registered with the post office?
- Do you have network?
- The system could be under maintenance – try again later
- Still not working? Visit the branch and get your number updated
Portal not loading
Try:
- Switch browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Edge – one usually works)
- Clear your cache
- Try early morning or late evening when less traffic
- Weekends sometimes have maintenance downtime
“Account number does not match”
Double check the number. Post office account numbers can go up to 17 digits. Look at your physical passbook for the exact number. Also make sure you selected the right scheme type in the dropdown.
Lost Your Passbook? Here is How to Get a Duplicate
Visit your home post office branch
Fill the duplicate passbook form
Submit it with a self-attested copy of Aadhaar and PAN
Pay Rs 50 (current fee)
Gets issued in a few days to a week
Updating Your Physical Passbook
Even with ePassbook around, sometimes you need the physical book updated – for loan applications, KYC, or just because you want it.
Option 1: Walk into any post office during working hours. Hand over the passbook. They update and stamp it.
Option 2: Some post offices have doorstep service. A postman picks it up and brings it back updated.
Heads up: Go on a weekday, preferably before lunch. Avoid Monday mornings and month-ends. Those are chaos hours.
Fee Chart
| Service | Fee |
|---|---|
| Duplicate passbook | Rs 50 |
| Statement of account | Rs 20 per case |
| Passbook for lost certificate | Rs 10 per registration |
| Change/cancel nomination | Free |
| ePassbook online | Free |
